Keyboard to pcb wires pulled out by accident, oops

Post by Ramshorn »

Eek help please i recently acquired a ql and with no keys working I have taken apart to inspect the membrane which I have discovered is cracked along the crease on one of the ribbons, problem is the collection of 6 or so wires which attach to a small black plug on the main board have detached from their little black plug (my fault trying to unplug it) and I didn't take note as to which order they were in, think there is a red, white, grey and a few black wires, any help appreciated, thanks.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb :!:

A keyboard membrane is easy to replace -

Just a note about the wires - it does not matter about the order of the black wires - they are all common ground, so can be in any order - is it the red, white and grey leads which need to be in the right order

Superb advice and pictures thanks very much, seems I haven't destroyed it after all phew, sorry for being a noob but what's the best way to reattach the wires, does the black plug detach from board or do I just push the wires back in to it ? Thanks

The black plug lifts upwards (grab the two ends and lift it up - it does not come clear of the motherboard), insert the wires and then push it back down to clamp the ends of the wires.

Be patient - 9 times out of 10, one of the wires will still be loose - give each a gentle tug to ensure they are held properly - otherwise, one will come out when you put the QL back together!

Just remember that pin 1 is not the top one; actually top to bottom is 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Guess who managed to mount the wires the wrong direction... ;)
