Maybe the answer is to install Linux on a tablet or phone. It seems that it is possible to install Ubuntu Touch on these devices.
How SMSQE would work with a touch screen is anyone's guess.
There is at least one tablet that claims to run Linux and costs less than 100 pounds as follows:-
Pinetab (currently out of stock) is an ARM based tablet with bootable microSD and a detachable keyboard.(
might solve the touch screen problem)

Several years ago, I tried a socalled "J2SE for Android" library which provided Swing and AWT classes for Android. Only used it with a relatively simple GUI though.
