ABS (case) melts at 105C. Nylon (spool) melts at 220C. Polyethylene terephthalate (tape) melts at 260C.

I think I'm good at 75C.

Dave wrote:Here in Texas, close to the Gulf Coast, typical humidity is >65%. Some microdrives get kind of "lumpy" and don't turn smoothly - there are fluctuations in the friction. Also, the capstan sometimes slips and picks up magnetic material. I know this is what is happening as I can measure the amps drawn by the motor and the current increases and decreases.

It seems removing the moisture changes that behavior, at least for me with two cartridges. I was willing to sacrifice them. I often have to bake components to prevent them being dam, aged during reflow if their packaging has been open for more than a few hours, but I bake components at 75C or 95C, depending on the type of component.
I know this problem very well...here to solve we need to let it run (the md's) very often during the year ;)

Nice one,
Another option is to store the devices with silica gel. A generous quantity of silica gel.
In my country is possible to buy 5 kilos bags of cat litter made of pure silica gel for 2-3 euros ;)

Maybe you should spend less on cat litter and more on fixing your logo, which keeps rebooting but never reaches a prompt. It's, just, so WRONG! :P

Sounds like a hardware problem to me Dave! :D

Cheers,
Norm.

OK so you made your nice kidding. Let's return in topic now.
I'm not so updated on exchange rates, anyway I can ensure that a one-time payment of 2-3 euros is very cheap. On the contrary energy (and time) is very expensive, so I prefer to preserve my devices with silica gel. Of course this is only my humble contribute to the preservation cause
