QL software archives?

Post by JonB »

Hi all

Where are the best QL software archives to be found? I scored a double disk upgrade and am keen to download!

Cheers

Dare I suggest my own: http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/downloads.html
Thierry Godefroy's site: http://qdos.free.fr/
Jonathan Hudson's site - Jonathan has ported a lot of Linux sources to QL: http://www.daria.co.uk/qdos/
Geoff Wicks, former QL trader "Just Words!": http://www.gwicks.net/justwords.htm
George Gwilt site - for Turbo compiler, assemblers etc etc: http://gwiltprogs.info/
Peter Jäger's QL web site (click on Software link at side): http://www.sinclairql.de/

Most of these sites have QL downloads as zip files. There are some articles about using QL zip and unzip on my site - click on the link under PC-QL File Transfer near the bottom of my home page. Most important thing (in case you've not come across this before): don't save a unzipped QL executable file onto a non-QL hard disk, Windows etc don't understand QL executable file headers and may end up giving weird error messages such as Bad Parameter when you try to execute them on a QL. BASIC programs and data files such as documents will be OK, they don't suffer that problem.
It's best to transfer the zip file downloads to a QL first, then unzip them on a QL, but this will give you a catch 22 situation of "I need to get a zipped copy of QL unzip across to my QL but I have no QL unzip there to unzip the zipped QL unzip program." If all else fails, go to the Archivers page on my website, look for Job2Bas section and download one of the unzip options. These are copies of QL unzip encoded as BASIC programs which when run will re-create a copy of QL unzip which can be saved on your QL system. That copy of Unzip will get you started and of course you can use it unzip more recent versions of QL unzip if you wish. You can get the most recent versions of QL zip and unzip from Jonathan Hudson's website above.

Plenty more download sites too - try some links from my QL web links page http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/gen/qlnet/qlnet.html

Otherwise, the easiest way is to use q-emulator to read downloaded zip files (registered version only) and write directly to QL formatted disks :)
