I have an issue 5 and an issue 6 QL.
The issue 6 has QIMI installed too.

I cannot find instructions on how Minerva is physically installed into the QL, especially with something like QIMI installed already.

Maybe I am dumb and missing something obvious but do I just plug the daughter board straight into the rom socket? nothing else?

Yeah, remove both ROM chips, insert Minerva board into one socket (left one if you have QIMI). That's about it.

thanks, gave that a try and the QL did not like it.
Possibly have duff Minerva rom so will try and get it reburnt.
