That is interesting...
I shall try my cloned SGC in an Iss5 as another test - I had been wondering whether the ZX8302 sitting one side of the DRAM bus or the other might also be contributing to the issue (timing accessing the PC would be slightly different, I believe.)

Thanks Marcel - yeah - before reading your last reply, I tried copying again, this time unmounting/remounting the SD card in Windows between each copy and received the same curious results from WIN_CHECK, so that mirrors your assessment

Hi Steven The HAL IC only came in to play on Issue 6 & 7 boards, so if you can't find that, its an Issue 5, which used standard 74-series logic chips that were later replaced by the HAL. Can you take a picture of the board and upload it here? As a REALLY cheap and cheerful Logic probe/analyser, ...

Great idea - Ive seen some alternative low-level routines available on Dilwyn's site that I could use - MMSE is clearly coded and should be pretty straightforward to patch...

No worries, Derek - was easy enough to spot and fix by hand! MMSE turns out to be quite the powerful tool - and having the source SB, I've got ideas to build on it. That said, the time it took to scan a couple of my borderline MDV carts - 30mins each, constant running - practically killed the cartri...
