Frankly, Richard Altwasser's designs were just much more clever. And I don't think the QL hardware disaster would have happened with him still at Sinclair.

Sounds like this has already been done in the Gold Card, so I will stick to that.

The Gold Card does not use the 8 bit bus for memory (except for ROMs and screen).

I may be wrong, but wouldn't that have required 8 more inputs on the ZX8301? That would also have been expensive.

That can be avoided by a few standard logic chips, multiplexing (and for better performance latching) the data lines.
