The ELF format wasn't taken up by most UNIXs until the mid-90s. Linux just followed the crowd.

Oh yes, ST-BASIC... IMHO Metacomco's programers merely liked the window layout from the QL. There's definitely no RED or BLACK backgrounds though and the BASIC is very much a Microsoft BASIC derived dialect.
