Being new to QL, and with the idea I'll be working on some hardware projects I figure I'll need a backplane so I can plug in a memory card floppy controller and a slot free for the project I'm about to start.
My quick solution to the same problem was to fit DIN41612 as shown...

OMG I never new that space was there, so much for what I know.
Its an ideal place for expansion too.
my concern would be for the electromagnetic issues that could arise from all those small cables, a pcb solution would be better. A great hobby addon.

Dave, I expect something from you :D

Neat idea, silvester! Now why didn't anyone think of that in the past. Needs some work to adapt the case for the connector, but an excellent idea.

The only 'right angle' expansion unit I ever saw was a board from either Miracle or Adman Services (I forget which) that protruded out from the QL, then two connectors at right angle on the end of that.

There have been one or two internal units in the past that have used this space, such as the QLEA ROM switcher unit in my QL. It allows me to have a Sinclair ROM and a Minerva in at the same time, with a switch at the back where Silvester has put the connector. You obviously can't 'hot-switch' - the QL will quickly crash if you try it - but it does allow you to power up or reset with a different ROM.

How did you get such a clean cut on the ABS?

I can't use the laser on ABS because it gets rather.... melty.
