Q68 page

Post by dilwyn »

I've started a page for the Q68 on my site. At the moment (thanks to Peter Graf) it has the Q68 mainboard user's manual and a small utility for setting the realtime clock on a Q68. Further Q68 stuff will be added as and when becomes available.

Thanks !
Great idea.

Have read it and found the following typos :
CPU
The microprocessor inside the Q68 and is code compatible to the 68000,

ROM
The Q68 has a 96 KB ROM
(I believe it should be 'an 96')

This done by the Q68

'monocrome' or 'monochrome' in the text

'mainbord' instead of 'main board'

Please note : I write all this to help, because I admire the work behind designing this board, and in no way it is to express despise or whatever.
Sorry if the Latin (or maybe only French) way of talking / writing can appear too direct and frank, it is just the way we act here,
and in no way is meant to hurt feelings ; but to improve final products.
Xavier.

Thanks, I saw even more typos, when re-reading after Dilywin uploaded it.

I think a 96Kb is ok, rather than an, it's how it scans that's important, an followed by 9 or ninety doesn't scan.

And you are right, sorry for my mistake I had read it too quickly as 86, even though I wrote 96.

Great manual btw. Thanks for the time and efforts.
I eager to use this board and try to convert my 'generated code for sprites pseudo just in time generator.' to see how fast it will run on it.
(knowing I am sure I'll get great help for members here, and I want that to be a community project, everybody will be able to use the results, for free).

Countdown is now 42 hours or so before a major announcement that will also benefit the QL community ;-)
Stay tuned ;-)

I, errr, confess to not having had time to even read it myself yet

A quick glance shows it to be to the high standard I expect from Peter :)

I fully intend to buy a Q68 later, but having no time at the moment I thought it best to wait until second batch before doing so.

Thank you Dilwyn, and apologies for the typo in your name.

The need to write a manual is one of those terrible differences between "tinkering for myself" and "make it available for the public". I really don't like that kind of work, and it takes me longer than adequate. I hope for a compromise between "comprehensive enough to be useful" and "short enough to be read".

The manual is great. Its release must increase the anticipation of the Q68 launch. BTW is there a way to over clock the Q68?

Externally, one could change the 20 MHz oscillator, and internally one of the PLLs. But that would also result in wrong SER baudrate, wrong frame interrupt, wrong clock, bad ethernet bus timings etc.

A far more rewarding way to increase speed would be to add cache. Maybe I'll do that someday, but I can't promise. One can estimate how fast cache would be, by testing code in the small "Fast RAM".
