SinclairQL.com - CALLING DAVE

Post by RWAP »

I was just wondering if anyone can give Dave Park a nudge - it would be nice to redirect the sinclairql.com domain to point at the QL Wiki.

Alas he isn't responding to me direct because I keep reminding him about sending me some stuff he has for me!

Or does anyone else have a spare domain name we could use?

I have a few domains but none of them related to sinclair QL.
But it looks like sinclairql.info is free and I can get it for less than EUR 10 the first year.
However I'll need a web server to host it on and this will cost a few euros a month (unless I host it myself, bandwidth is not a problem as I have a 100Mbit FttH connection, but it's more the hassle of setting up a system and keeping it secure).
I have a test setup of MediaWiki on my Synology NAS which is the same software that Wikipedia runs on. It would be interesting to use this for a QL Wiki (on a new machine, maybe I could use the machine that now runs the BBS if I convert to Linux and run the BBS under dosemu).

But if anyone here has a better idea I would like to know...

later, Jan.

I don't mind it sitting on my server still - let's face it, what we need are people adding stuff to it.

The problem with adopting another wiki software now would be that the existing information would need to be re-written. When I was talking with Dave, we both had a look at converting it over to another Wiki format, but the database formats were horrendous!

Rich, I may have something. Note sure if it will work, need to check when I'm back home from my journey, but upfront here's my proposal:
A new subdomain to my sinclairql.net called wiki.sinclairql.net, configured to “autoforward” to your host. Any good?

Yes that would be good - I was thinking what we really need is one Sinclair QL Domain which would help SEO and search results.

You could then have a series of sudomains which point to the relevent sites:

wiki.sinclairql.net (pointing to the QL Wiki)
software.sinclairql.net (pointing to Dilwyn's site)
forums.sinclairql.net (pointing here)
smsqe.sinclairql.net

Possibly some other subdomains would be useful (ideas welcome).

www.sinclairql.net could then have a simple home page with some nice graphics to direct users to the correct subdomains...

Hi,

I would be open to selling the domain if I got an interesting offer. However, I am not interested in letting it be used in the manner proposed above. I still have plans to use it some day - beyond as my email address, that is.

Dave

I am not doing anything. Everything is boxed up and in storage.
