QUILL do not save documents

Post by dely »

Hello,

I am new user of QL and QUBIDE and I am looking for help with QUILL.

I have transferred PSION's office (from http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/psions/index.html) to my QUBIDE CF card and everything works fine except for saving QUILL documents. When I try to save a document created in QUILL and load it back I get error:

Not a valid QUILL file

I have transferred file to PC and after examination I realized that all files saved by Quill are 64 bytes (see attached file).

Files saved in Easel, Abacus, Archive are correct and they are loading fine. What could be wrong with Quill?

My setup: German QL, QUBIDE (QUBIDE/REBEL Driver v1.56 1997), 256MB CF card.

Thanks for help!

Which version of Quill did you use from the QL Homepage?

It might be an issue with Quill - especially if you used one of the foreign language versions......

Hi,

I have tried both versions (2.35 and 2.30) for floppy disk in English. Thanks for your help.

Hmm - that is very odd - I will try it on my Qubide with Trump Card (all-in one interface) - not quite your system, but it should work without any issues.....

I assume you are using WIN_USE flp to redirect the save routine to the QubIDE....

Does anyone else have a standard QubIDE to try it with?

The other option is to download Xchange and use the Word Processor built into that (you need 640K RAM on the QL to run this).

Quill has the nasty habit of grabbing nearly all available memory, even if it doesn't need as much. It could be that it doesn't leave enough free memory for QubIDE to work properly.

You can try to restrict Quill's memory usage by QPAC2, for example, or use XChange which behaves better in this respect.

Regards,
Tobias

I might be wrong,it has been known, but did Simon N Goodwin do a DIY Toolkit routine to get around this problem at some point in the past?

What I used to do was:

Activate toolkit 2 with tk2_ext.
Address = alchp (whatever)
Execute quill (or archive or abacus)
Rechp (address)

Whatever was the amount of memory I had spare minus a decent amount for what I needed outside of quill.

Might work?

Cheers,
Norm.

Have a look at http://simon.mooli.org.uk/QL/DIY_Toolkit.html and click the download link. That gets you everything. I think taskforce is what I'm remembering, in volume j.

Cheers,
Norm.

Excuse me, but I am a newbie in QL. Could you post step by step instructions?

Thank you!

Do you know if your QL has additional memory attached? If you only have a standard 128KB then it is entirely possible that you might not have enough to manage Quill and the SD hard drive. I don't have an SD drive, so I don't know if it also supplies extra ram, or not, nor do I know if it needs to allocate some of your ram for itself, its buffers etc.

Does

PRINT FREE_MEM

work?

Cheers,
Norm.

No, it does not. It is from TOOLKIT which I do not have.

But using informations from this post: http://qlforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=322#p2048 I have got following numbers:

325 and 640 :)

Thank you,
