Quill files to PC?

Post by Haemogoblin »

Hey guys

I have a question.

I'd like to write something on Quill and then get it on my Windows PC. From my knowledge of the QL, the only way I can do this is by saving to floppy and then loading in to an emulator. Is that right? or is there an alternative I'm not aware of?

My QL is running standard QDOS with 512kb ram expansion and floppy drive.

That is the best way - and then there are various tools you can use on the emulator to convert the Quill file to something that the PC can handle:

I quite like the QL-2-PC utility by Geoff Wicks - http://www.gwicks.net/downloads.htm

There is also this: https://github.com/MikaelStrom/quill-view

I have not tried it but it seems that it will do what you want without having to use an emulator in the PC.

Not sure whether it's exactly what you requested, but it may be worth a look?

I've used quill view in the past, you drag your file onto that one in windows and it converts it. It's a bit strange but it works :)

Yes, just rtied it on my Mac. I exported as HTML, opened that in TextEdit and Saved As Word 2007. Worked a charm.

Hi,

Why not use Qstripper by Norman Dunbar, it can be found at:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/qstripper/

Works great on Windows, Linux and converts Quill files to many formats.

Out of curiosity, how are you guys getting your files on to a Windows / Mac environment? My QL doesn't read dos disks.

mtools on the QL will read and write files to DOS floppies. Mtools can be found on Dilwyn's web page. Since I don't use Windows or DOS, I read a QL formatted disk using Linux dd command and create a floppy image file, which can be read by SMSQmulator.

There are a number of tools that will convert Quill to different formats including RTF. RTF keeps the formatting of the original document. Most of these are on Dilwyn's web page. Most word processors will accept RTF documents (Word, Open Office, etc).

Firstly, recognising that the file transfer is a two stage process:

(1) converting the file itself (e.g. converting a Quill doc file to a .rtf file toimportinto a word processor on another machine)
(2) the physical file transfer itself.

For (2) I use the following methods, depending on what systems I'm using. All this assumes I'm transferring a disk from a Black Box QL (BBQL) to a Windows PC (I don't use Macs or Linux).

(a) I use a program called Discover http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/filetran/index.htmlon the QL to read and write to DOS format floppy disks. Some care is needed here, as most QLs use DSDD 720KB floppy disks, but some modern PCs with recent versions of Windows might not cope with DSDD disks. Other such programs like MTools at http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/files/index.html and MultiDOS on http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/filetran/index.html can also be used in QDOS.

(b) on Windows, I can use a program called WXQT2. It's easy to use, but setting up is a bit of a pain, as it needs QXLTool and QLTools (same page) at http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/files/index.html WXQT2 has the advantage that it's a menu driven Windows program and it can handle QDOS floppy disks, QXL.WIN from emulators and DOS/Windows directories. WXQT2 is essentially a front end on Jonathan Hudson's QXLtool and QLTools.

(c) serial link if the PC has one (my current desktop PC hasn't).

(d) the disk reading capabilities of the emulators QemuLator and QPC2.
