Re: Fun things to do with an MC68EC020....

Those are my instincts too, Nasta. Some kind of expansion is essential. There's a cost to adding the wider bus, but there's a different and much more permanent cost to omitting it. The extra 24 data lines are useful in their entirety. It's not so important to have any additional address lines availa...

Re: Fun things to do with an MC68EC020....

We're just looking at doing a 12MB on-board RAM so there's no need for any kind of RAM expansion. The catch is that people will want to still use expanded storage like CF or IDE, and might like a floppy interface. There are a number of possibilities for interfaces where they could benefit from 16- o...

Re: Fun things to do with an MC68EC020....

You have shared a bunch of interesting ideas and commentary. Between you, you've all given me some clear ideas about direction. The thing I am thinking about now is the thru-connector. We know we'd need to include a basic QL connector, but we'd also like to make the extra address and data lines avai...

Re: Fun things to do with an MC68EC020....

This thread is for 68EC020 possibilities.

If you'd like to start a separate SMSQ customization or Q68 thread, that would be great. SMSQ as it relates to a 68EC020 is fine though.

Re: Expansion serial card?

Well, wiznet does have a SSL/TLS offload engine coming up. ;) Silicon Labs got nothing. I occasionally contract for them. They. Got. Nothing. Frankly my solution would be to do mild obscure encryption of data, then use a proxy modern machine to do the SSL. That said, the WiFi card they do has an enc...

Re: Expansion serial card?

I don't plan to use the CP2200. It's not a bad choice, but there are better ones now. I'd rather go uphill from scratch with a hardware TCP/IP stack than fumble around with that slow old thing. A TCP/IP offload engine is the way to go. That way all we need to port is the SSL/TLS library.

Re: Expansion serial card?

It's been my frustration that there haven't been any good, easy to implement TCP/IP solutions to add ethernet to a QL-style system without hugely overburdening the QL CPU OR being heavily dependent on the QL's poor inbuilt serial. Functional ethernet is an important keystone. Anyone should be able t...

Re: Expansion serial card?

I think my approach is pretty simple: find *something* that can work, test it and see if it provides the utility I am looking for, then just go to Nasta to ask what the best way to improve this problem is. I like the idea of using something Minerva recognizes as a serial port because there's a lot o...

Re: Fun things to do with an MC68EC020....

This sounds like some weird power or dry joint problem. A good place to start is to gently open her up and reseat all the ICs. Check around the 7805 (the 3-pin thing in the middle of the black heatsink on the right, behind the two microdrive units.) Start it up a couple of times with the lid off and...

Re: Expansion serial card?

Dilwyn is traveling for the next week or so. He won't be making any updates during that time.

Would you be willing to send me the files directly also? I'm impatient to find out if this represents a solution to my problem ;)
