Re: New User - Randy Kindig (Floppy Days)

Hello Randy,

Happy New Year & welcome to the forum!

A third option for Microdrive emulation on the QL would be OqtaDrive, which would also work with your Spectrums.

Happy QL-Hacking!

Re: QL storage solutions: Pros, cons and opinions.

Good idea, since the MDV images are stored on the RPI Zero W SD Card. Does the RPI support hot swapping of the SD Card? No, the Pi would have to be powered down. That's why I actually wouldn't advise doing this, unless you really, really want to be able to remove the card. But I don't see a need to...

Re: QL storage solutions: Pros, cons and opinions.

The only solution for storing MDV images on a removal SD Card, or media is the vDrive, but it is not internal line the Oqtadrive. If you add a Micro-SD extender cable to an internal OqtaDrive, and mount the standard SD socket end of that cable with a 3D printed mounting bracket in one of the slots,...

Re: QL storage solutions: Pros, cons and opinions.

I get you can map real or emulated mdv's from other QL's in the network - but what if you don't have one - you are then left with the need to run an emulator and a USB to QL NET adaptor - but I was talking of a single machine solution. In my comment further up I was actually thinking about the stor...

What about 'networked'? Would that be subsumed in 'transportable'?

Re: QL storage solutions: Pros, cons and opinions.

It's an interesting discussion as to what the most appropriate data storage solution for the QL is... Finding the most appropriate storage solution for the QL per se might be problematic. I think you would need to look at what you want to do with the QL, and then find what's appropriate for that. ....

Re: New microdrive internal replacement

Caveat emptor: All I'm writing here is totally and utterly opinionated. Yes, a small, direct internal microdrive replacement, medium inserted through the QL slot. That would be cool. I have no idea why this most natural approach has never been taken yet, by any microdrive emulator. People create pro...

Derek_Stewart wrote: Fri Dec 15, 2023 8:51 am The Oqtadrive, I have some to make, but as far as I can see, it requires, a web or SSH/Telnet command line connection to control the Microdrive image selection to drive slots.
OqtaDrive can also be controlled from the QL, using only the built-in open_new, print, and close BASIC commands.

Re: OqtaDrive

Glad to hear it's working! :D Yeah, sometimes it's the really basic stuff that goes wrong, and all the time we think it must be something really complicated. Been there too... Have loads of fun with your OqtaDrive!
